
According to preliminary data, Tata Steel’s production for the second quarter of the 2024/2025 fiscal year (July to September 2024) reached 5.27 million tons, reflecting a 5% increase year-on-year. During this period, domestic supply rose by 5.8% to 5.1 million tons.
- In the first half of the 2024/2025 fiscal year, Tata Steel India’s production grew by 5% year-on-year, totaling 10.53 million tons.
Significant Growth in Tata Steel Netherlands
Meanwhile, Tata Steel Netherlands saw impressive growth:
- Steel production reached 1.68 million tons in the July-September period, marking a 41.2% year-on-year increase.
- Shipments also rose by 16.9% to 3.04 million tons.
Decline in Tata Steel UK’s Production
Conversely, Tata Steel UK experienced a downturn:
- Production in Q2 2024/2025 dropped by 50% year-on-year to 380,000 tons.
- Shipments declined by 12.3% to 640,000 tons.
On September 30, 2024, the company closed the last operational blast furnace (No. 4) at its Port Talbot plant, ceasing pig iron and raw material production at the site.
Expansion in Tata Steel India
In September 2024, Tata Steel India successfully commissioned the country’s largest blast furnace in Kalinganagar.
- With this expansion, India’s steel production capacity is set to increase to 26.6 million tons annually.
Cost-Cutting Measures at Tata Steel Netherlands
Facing the current market downturn, Tata Steel Netherlands announced cost-cutting measures in September 2024:
- The company cited severe overcapacity in the European market, low steel prices, and a wait-and-see attitude among customers as major challenges.
- Additionally, pressure on the automotive sector is expected to directly affect steel manufacturers.
