
Brazil’s Pig Iron Exports Surge 50.9% in September
According to data released by Brazil’s Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce, and Services on October 7, Brazil’s commercial pig iron exports rose significantly by 50.9% year-on-year in September 2024, reaching 379,956 tons. This increase reflects strong global demand and makes September the second-highest export month of the year, following only January’s 426,652 tons.
Compared to August, when exports totaled 270,100 tons, September’s figures showed a 40.7% month-on-month increase, marking a substantial recovery in export activity.
Key Export Destinations
In September, the main buyers of Brazil’s pig iron were:
- United States: 345,189 tons
- Mexico: 25,009 tons
- Netherlands: 4,461 tons
The majority of the exports were shipped through the ports of Rio de Janeiro, Vitória, and São Luís, underscoring the importance of these export hubs.
Year-to-Date Overview
As of January to September 2024, Brazil has exported a total of 2.801 million tons of pig iron, a slight 0.35% decrease compared to the same period in 2023. Despite this minor decline, recent growth trends indicate a steady recovery in the global pig iron market.
