Key Data on September Production Decline
The Italian Steel Association reported on October 17 that Italy’s crude steel production in September dropped by 8.4% year-on-year to 1.8 million tons. This decline stems from reduced output at Acciaierie d’Italia (ADI), the country’s second-largest steel producer, coupled with weaker demand due to economic fluctuations in the region.

Specific Production Declines by Category

  • Long Steel: Production decreased by 5.4%, down to 1.1 million tons.
  • Flat Steel: Suffered the largest drop, falling 9.1% to 755,000 tons.

2024 Year-to-Date Overview
As of the first nine months of 2024, Italy’s total steel production decreased to 15.1 million tons, a 5.6% drop from the previous year. Notably:

  • Long Steel output showed a slight uptick, growing 0.5% to 8.8 million tons.
  • Flat Steel output fell sharply by 10.3%, reaching 6.4 million tons.

Annual Industry Insights
In 2023, Italy’s steel sector produced 21.1 million tons, marking a 2.5% decline compared to 2022. Forecasts suggest that production in 2024 may continue this downward trend, slightly undershooting 2023 levels.
